Celebrating Success
St. Luke Runs To Support A Good Cause! by Samantha Menapace
Relay for Life was a fun and exciting time. It was a very humbling experience to watch so many people who have life-threatening diseases live lives of hope, love and happiness. Despite their suffering and pain, both emotionally and physically, all of the cancer patients who came to the Relay were smiling, laughing and having fun. It almost seemed as if they forgot about their sickness, and really focused on helping others with cancer and living life to the fullest. Because of this experience, we will be stronger and braver during the hard parts in our lives.

Prayer as ‘Learned Helplessness’
The question has come up from last month: “Now that I’ve stopped talking (so much), what on earth do I do? I may not be saying any words when I pray, but they are still there, tumbling around my mind like so many gnats on a hot day. How do I turn them off?
The late Dr.Jerry May, my mentor at the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation, suggested that I number my thoughts, one by one as they come up, like so many sheep in a dream. He also said that in the beginning of learning to pray (talking with God), it helps to have a dedicated place you use each time. If you use only this spot in the beginning, eventually positioning yourself into it will become a habit. Imagine yourself passing through a door and leaving all thoughts behind.
