An Ecumenical Welcome to the Coptic Church

What would Saint Luke think of sharing worship space? They called and made an appointment to see the church. At the time of the appointment, Susan Andrews and Liz Harmon were moving Christmas poinsettias into the sanctuary. The visitors asked if they could help? The ladies responded that the job was done, but could they be of help? So the story unfolded. Would Saint Luke, with its beautiful sanctuary, consider sharing worship space with the newly forming Coptic (Egyptian) Church of Saint Mary and Saint Mercurius.

Worship services in the Coptic church are on Saturdays and of course they understood that Saint Luke weddings and funerals took precedence and the worship space would be respected and left as they found it. Discussions were held. The Coptic Church is an original church started in the early times of Christianity so being welcoming is entirely appropriate. It was decided to go ahead. Later that day their bishop called and said if a worship place was available a priest would be available. Is seems that God was at work extending His kingdom.

They have celebrated Christmas and Epiphany and have held Saturday worship with increasing numbers of people. Our Altar Guild has changed their schedule and we are growing into this relationship. Their service is in three languages, Egyptian (Coptic), Arabic, and English.

We would recognize the Kyrie, Gloria, and prayers though the tunes might sound different. Their church is as old as Christianity and gives us an opportunity to learn more about the wealth and diversity of our common faith. As Jesus prayed, in John 17: v11; “that they may be one”; this is an opportunity for us to work toward that mighty goal.

At the Saint Luke Council meeting on January 19th, the leaders of the Church of Saint Mary and Saint Mercurius were welcomed. We agreed to an ongoing relationship while both are in agreement. They will worship on Saturdays and other holy days subject to our schedule, leave all in order as they find it and make reasonable good will gifts.

Likely there will be questions to resolve. And there will be times for growing in knowledge and appreciation of one another. We both love good food and coffee so a potluck is not far off.

If there are concerns, please share them with Liz Harmon, Councilor for Support, the Pastors or any member of Council.
